Gudeok is a Jeju word meaning 'basket' which is a representative living tool of Jeju. Gudeok in Jeju is generally made by splitting bamboo into small bamboo, which is called "jokdae" or "suri-dae."

Since the early modern times, it has been widely used by Jeju residents by naming it according to its use, including baby guduk for putting babies to sleep, seaweed guduk for carrying seaweed collected by haenyeo, and jilguduk for its back. It was designated as an intangible cultural asset of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province in April 2019 as it was recognized to contain Jeju's unique locality and living culture.

Kim Hee-chang, the holder of the Gudeok production, was recognized as the holder of the Gudeok production for 65 years because he had a deep understanding of the techniques and excellent transmission skills for the entire Gudeok process.
