Gaecheonjeol, which means "Gaecheon" that opened the sky, is a day to commemorate Hwanung's descent from the sky below the new Dansu of Baekdusan Mountain, or Dangun Wanggeom's establishment of Gojoseon on October 3 of the lunar calendar in 2333 B.C. (the first year of Dangun's reign.

It was established to inherit the founding ideology of the Hongik people, to promote pride as a cultural nation with a long history and tradition, and to pray for the eternal prosperity of the descendants.

The National Foundation Day celebration was held on October 3, 1948 in the lunar calendar. With the enactment of the "National Day Act" in 1949, the National Foundation Day celebration was held on October 3, the Gregorian calendar.

On this day, the national flag of the Republic of Korea will be hoisted.
