    The May 10 general election was the first democratic election in the Republic of Korea to elect a member of the National Assembly to form the Constitutional Assembly on May 10, 1948.

    With 35 observers dispatched by the U.N. Korean Committee monitoring the election, South Korea secured 91.7% of voter registration as the first ordinary and equal election in South Korea and conducted alone.

    On May 31, the Constitutional Assembly was opened for the first time in the history of Korean constitutional government, and Rhee Syng-man was elected as the National Assembly Speaker and Shin Ik-hee as the Vice Chairman.
